Due to changes in YouTube’s embed, the homepage carousel “Background” format has been updated. The goal is to keep the carousel feeling like a backdrop while still giving users clear, expected playback controls when they want to watch a trailer.

What changed (and why)

1. Layout + controls (desktop)

   • YouTube now requires a central play button on embedded videos. Previously the video could behave more like a background/backdrop with minimal controls.
   • To keep the experience intuitive, we’ve added:
     • Sound on/off
     • Pop-out trailer
   • The videos autoplay (with sound off), users can then swipe/slide to the next item to watch more.
   • We’ve also aligned the copy to the bottom-left to avoid competing with the required play button and other controls.

2. Images now required

   • An image is now required for carousel items using the Background format.
     • For existing items, we temporarily use the YouTube thumbnail so there’s always an image present.
   • On desktop, the image acts as a fallback and pre-video loading holder.
   • On mobile, we no longer use video backgrounds in this carousel:
     • The carousel shows the image plus a button to play the trailer.
     • This is better for UX and SEO, and reduces clutter from multiple on-video controls on small screens.
